What is Counselling?

Carl Rogers, an influential therapist in the 20th century, emphasised the importance of the qualities of the counsellor and how they could promote understanding and change within clients. He wrote..

If I can create a relationship characterised on my part :
Then the other individual in the relationship :
Rogers (1961)

I believe that provision of a non-judgemental and trusting environment where clients can safely explore any issue that is important to them underpins successful counselling. I aim to provide this within my work and value the trust clients place in me as a counsellor. I think humanistic approaches to counselling and provision of core conditions of empathy, genuiness and respect give clients the respect and understanding they deserve as human beings. In some cases these may be things they have never experienced before and can therefore have a profound effect on how they develop their self understanding and deal with change.

I believe counselling can provide space and time for clients to explore and understand what troubles them and make their own choices on how to live their lives. I continually seek to provide this type of environment for my clients and be with them throughout their journey.

If you feel counselling would help you I offer an initial meeting or discussion free of charge for up to 30 minutes. I feel this helps potential clients make an informed choice about whether they wish to use my counselling services.
